I love this article by the Washington Post.
It’s a classic: “How to Get Away from Your Job and Into Someone else’s.”
As if the world isn’t already full of examples of how people get out of their jobs and into another person’s.
“It’s a great tip,” said my friend, who was laid off in October.
“But it can be frustrating and difficult.”
“I love this tip,” I replied.
“It’s so simple.
It takes about 30 seconds to do it right.
I have a friend who is currently in her first job, and she’s been working on her resume for about six months.
She says, ‘I’m going to do the same thing for two months.
I’m going through this process and when I finish, I’ll start looking for another job.
I’ll make sure to get out there and be open about it.’
She’s not alone.
The average person is doing this.
It just takes so little time.”
It sounds simple enough.
This is one of those things that can take a lifetime to master.
Here are the steps.
Step 1: Ask someone to explain.
It doesn’t matter who you ask.
You don’t have to be a millionaire or a multimillionaire to do this.
Just say something like, “Hi, I’m looking for a new job.
What is it?”
If you have experience or knowledge, give it a shot.
This might be a bit of a waste of time.
But if you have no experience or even less, this can be done with a friend.
You might even get a coworker to help you.
If you can’t afford to pay the coworker, ask your friends to help.
I once did a job search where I asked my friends to look for jobs for me.
They came up with jobs for someone else.
My friend said, “I’ll take a look for you.
It’ll take me five minutes.
What’s it worth?”
Step 2: The person you’re asking should know a bit about you.
This doesn’t necessarily have to have to come from your LinkedIn or your social media profiles.
If they know someone who you’re interviewing, it’s not a bad idea to ask them about you personally.
It’s important to have a conversation.
If you can talk for a few minutes about yourself, you’ll get more out of this.
A friend who has an assistant, who doesn’t know you personally, will be able to give you information about yourself and help you to figure out what to ask for.
Another person who knows you personally could be a great help.
They can tell you what the minimum asking price is, and if they know a local location, they can offer to drive you to that location and get you there.
And the next step is to give them your resume.
The goal here is to have someone to answer all of your questions.
Remember, this isn’t your personal resume, it is someone else’s.
So, even if you don’t want to work for them, ask for someone who can.
For this, you need to have the most recent of your resume and the same number of jobs you’re applying for.
Then, give them the resume, but not the job description.
They can help you with that, too.
Once you have a list of job openings, it will help you figure out how much it will cost to find each job.
There are some websites that allow you to see a detailed listing of what it will take to fill a position.
Now, what you’re looking for in a new position is the kind of person you’d want to have working for you, right?
So, the next thing you need is someone who has a background that is relevant to your current position.
You might want to ask someone to describe how they started, what they’re doing right now, and how you can help them.
Again, it doesn’t have anything to do with how much they have to make.
Your goal is to get a job that is meaningful to you, and that someone will want to hire you.
That person can be anyone.
